Inspiring Young Bookworms in New Orleans

When Homedale Elementary in New Orleans put out an urgent request for library books last fall, the McDonogh community and Towson's Ukazoo Books answered the call. The library will open in the next few weeks.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune ran this photo on its front page on August 25. The McDonogh community's efforts are noted in the caption.

Another Times-Picayune photo captured the Homedale community's gratitude to McDonogh's Mary Catherine Irving and Craig Whiteford, who drove a truck full of 17,000 books to the school last winter.

This project grew from McDonogh's connection with McDonogh 26 Elementary in Gretna, Louisiana since Hurricane Katrina. McD. 26 staff member Sally Falcone has been the liaison.

Reported Irving on August 26, "Sally Falcone called this morning just to once more tell us how appreciated all the efforts were to supply them with these books."
