Fifth Graders Shine in National Competition

Several fifth graders recently received high honors in the WordMasters Challenge, a national language arts competition entered by over 250,000 students annually. Coached by reading teacher Nancy McFadden, the students competed in the difficult Blue Division against 36,980 students from 699 schools nationwide.

Kassidy H. was part of an elite group of 84 fifth graders who won top honors for individual achievement by earning perfect scores in the meet. Duncan F. and Nolan M. also achieved outstanding results. They were among 195 students in the country with just one mistake. McDonogh students will just two errors included Yak F., Atia R., Brent H. Sam S., and Parker M. They were matched by only 300 competitors nationally.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that encourages students to become familiar with a set of new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of relationships.

The test has been administered for the past 23 years by a company based in Allendale, New Jersey, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools. McDonogh students with the highest scores for the year will receive medals and certificates at the Middle School Spring Recognition Assembly.
