MLK Day Conference to Examine Haitian Tragedy

Teachers: sign up online for the Global Citizenship Institute today!

McDonogh School will be host its first annual Global Citizenship Institute on January 18, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students and teachers area-wide.

The conference, entitled "Public Service and Public Health," will use the tragedy in Haiti as an imperative for understanding and action.

One of the original conference speakers, Dr. Joia Mukherjee, is now in Haiti assisting survivors. Another expert is expected to take her place.

Dr. Patrick Byrne, a Baltimore plastic surgeon and Co-Director of the Greater Baltimore Cleft Lip and Palate Team of GBMC, will explain the basic principles of public health. He supports Operation Smile, an organization that provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children around the globe.

"We believe that engaging students in a service-oriented conversation on Martin Luther King Day is an excellent way to honor Dr. King’s legacy," said faculty member Adam Mayer, the institute's leader.

Mayer has invited upper schoolers from area public and independent schools to participate in the McDonogh Global Citizenship Institute.

The conference is free for McDonogh students and $10 for participants from other schools. School groups may bring a check, made payable to McDonogh School, to the conference.
