"There Goes My House ..."

The excavator struck the roof of the Doyles Woods house just before 7:30 a.m. 6月3日. Each time the bucket clasped, a small audience of campus residents, 孩子们, 工作人员, and administrators listened for the distinctive crunching sound.

“哇!" the crowd exclaimed as the north brick wall collapsed. They stood a safe distance away, across Woods Road in the lower school parking lot.

"There goes my house," said longtime housekeeping 工作人员 member Billy Ray Cole when the equipment struck the middle of the long, one-story building next to the bus shop. "I lived there for 13 years," he said earlier. "I think there were some ghosts in there."

There are no ghosts there now, as the remains of Doyles Woods sit in a mound of wood, 电线, 煤渣, 块, 和砖. Demolition took a little more than half an hour. A few cars and buses slowed as they approached the structure, allowing students to watch the process.

A required storm water management pond will be constructed where Doyles Woods sat until today. It is part of the first phase of 校园 Master Plan projects, which will eventually include construction of the St. John Student Center and the Naylor Building for science, technology, engineering, and math.

Even in its last days, Doyles Woods remained a useful structure. Firefighters from a nearby company practiced breaking down its metal-framed doors. Locks and HVAC materials were removed for re-use. Copper downspouts were sold. Windows were used to make dog kennels.

The brick and masonry siding will be ground up to be used as a stone base for future road work.

Doyles Woods housed members of the housekeeping and maintenance 工作人员 for 50 years. Former residents included Hoset Elleby, Melvin Warren, and Dallas Fields. Its last two occupants, Billy Ray and a colleague, have moved to another apartment on campus.

Added Billy Ray, "It's kinda sad, but I love my new place!"
