Third Graders Polish Their Shoe-Shining Skills

Everyone likes to wear shiny shoes. At least that's what third graders were hoping as they sought customers for their temporary shoeshine stand on September 26 and 27.

Working side by side in the Elderkin Hall lobby, the children buffed loafers, heels, and lace-ups to a glistening shine. They applied polish with their fingers and used an assortment of rags and brushes to produce the gleam of new leather.

The children learned the craft while reading the book "The Shoeshine Girl" by Claude Bulla. They also learned that it's important to help others when you can.

The children will use proceeds from their project for fleece to make blankets for the Red Devils, which provides services to breast cancer patients.

Among those getting shoes shined was Director of Finance Jeanne Backof, former president of the Red Devils. Her nephew, Stephen P. '21, polished her pumps.

Parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends took advantage of the service. Focused, industrious children impressed patrons with their skills.
