Tomato or Tomahto?

First graders enjoyed a beautiful April day planting a variety of tomato seeds. Each student planted four seeds in colored cups which they will care for over the next few weeks while the seeds mature in the greenhouse.

On May 1, the classes will transplant the seedlings to McDonogh Roots. Over the summer, students are encouraged to continue caring for the plants by weeding and staking. In August, first grade teachers are planning a harvest evening, when the rising second graders can pick the tomatoes.

“Allowing the students to watch the seeds grow to plants to bearing fruit is a valuable teaching opportunity,” said first grade teacher Ellee Thompson. “And, while it doesn’t change many taste buds, it is fun for the kids.”
