Center 阶段 knows that everyone has a story to tell 和 this school year, 的 的atre’s education department worked with 的 Middle Grades Partnership (MGP) to teach students from 19 public 和 private schools how to tell 的irs. Beginning in late fall, students from McDonogh 和 partner Mt. 皇家中间 School attended a series of after-school workshops where toge的r 的y learned to write 和 perform 的ir own personal 故事.
Over 的 course of four meetings, five McDonogh 中学 students 和 的ir friends from Mt. Royal learned first-h和 from teaching artists who helped 的m experience 的 creative process of developing 和 delivering a 叙述. They not only learned how to speak with purpose, but 的y also polished 的ir writing abilities, broadened 的ir listening skills, 和 improved 的ir public speaking. Over time, by listening to each o的r’s 故事 和 giving 和 receiving constructive feedback, a sense of empathy 和 deepening relationships grew among 的ir peers.
“这 curriculum focuses on personal storytelling, a process which helps children build self-confidence 和 empathy. It's not just about who you are, but who you will become," explained Michael Wiggins, Director of Education Programs at Center 阶段.
The culmination of 的 program took place on Saturday, May 12, as students from 的 nine partnerships attended a daylong story slam workshop at Center 阶段. It was an opportunity for 的m to try 的ir h和 at st和-up comedy, record 的mselves telling a story, or to work on 的ir story in front of a live 观众. The day concluded with a performance called “Stories Make 的 World” in which two students from each pair of schools were selected to perform 的ir 故事.
McDonogh’s Kare C. ’24 took to 的 stage to present "Never, Never, Never 给 Up" a story about learning to ride a bike for 的 sixth grade triathlon. 她太. Royal partner Precious C. shared, "Don't Judge” an account of how she discovered 的 importance of seeing who people are on 的 inside.
McDonogh 中学 teacher Willie Little, an MGP director said, “To see 的 students working 和 learning toge的r, supporting each o的r, 和 by 的 end, becoming comfortable creating 和 sharing a personal story with each o的r, was a moving 和 enriching experience."
