#3 Will Always Belong to Catie

Catie肉体 '10 once wrote to her volleyball teammates that she would always be there for them, on or off the court. Sadly, she wasn't able keep that promise.

Catie's teammates, along with coaches Ginger Gelston, J.B. Rothen, and Jim Tsouvalos, took Catie's sudden death in September especially hard. But they found a way to keep her with them in Memorial Field House. And to give her family something else of Catie's to cherish.

To honor Catie's memory, the school retired her jersey before the varsity volleyball team's last home game of the regular season on October 8. Senior team captains presented Catie's mother, Denise, with Catie's #3 jersey, framed. 同时, the Carnes family watched the unveiling of Catie's commemorative #3 jersey, which now hangs on the wall of the gymnasium as a permanent memorial.

Athletic Director Mickey Deegan's remarks from the ceremony follow:

"Tonight we take a moment to remember a wonderful young woman, Catie肉体, 2010届毕业生, who suddenly died on September 1 and left a huge void in our school community. Catie was an awesome girl who played volleyball and was an accomplished equestrian.

Catie played a total of six years of volleyball since the 7th grade. A member of the varsity team for last three years, Catie was an outside hitter who played in 61 games, 有39个a, 88% serving success, 33的攻击, 67次挖掘.

No doubt those who knew her on the court always remembered that great smile and enthusiasm when she was in the game. Who else but Catie had her personal cheerleaders in the gym?

She wrote to her teammates that she wanted to be captain because, “I think we have a great team this year and could accomplish many great things this season. I promise to be always there for you, whether it is on or off the court, whether it is with school or family problems. I promise to make this season as fun as possible."

你知道吗?? 她就是这么做的.

When a school retires a player’s jersey, it is typically because that athlete has reached the pinnacle of success and notoriety by his or her contributions to the team’s program over four years. Sometimes it is for scoring the most points or leading a team to consecutive championships.

It often means that no one will ever come along like him or her ever again.

Well, this is true for Catie. No one will ever replace Catie in our hearts and memory!

I took the liberty of looking up the significance of the #3 and how it relates to personalities and this is what I discovered.

“The number 3 person is someone who loves connecting with people. The characteristics of the 3 are warmth and friendliness, a good conversationalist, social and open. A good talker both from the standpoint of being a delight to listen to, but even more importantly, one who has the ability to listen to others. These individuals know how to make others feel at home. Their approach to life is exceedingly positive. This person is almost surely sunny and openhearted.”

哇! 听起来像凯蒂?

Catie, you were this sunny person to all of us. When we see your #3 jersey each day now, we know you will be smiling down on us at practice and games and we are grateful to have known you and to have played by your side."
